Dear Gays of Cleveland,

I am writing you to inform you about the upcoming referenda in Santa Clara County. I have enclosed two leaflets explaing the local situation. To update these leaflets, I must inform you of two developments. First, the Community Ad Hoc Committee for Human Rights has voted unaminously to become a part of the Sata Clara Valley Coalition for Human Rights, Second, the city council and the county board of supervisors have voted to have the ordianaces on the ballots and the election will most likely be June 3, 1980, the California primary ballot.

We are facing a well organized and well financed opposition of fundamentalist and Mormons We can beat them in the election if we have national and local support. The San Francisco community is expected to be strongly supportive, but will largely have to wait until January. They are now involved in the city November elections and the expected December run-offs. They are exhausted both financially and emotionally. We however need to launch our campaign immediately. I appeal to you for support. We need national awareness that there is a referendum battle in Santa Clara county. We also need national financial support.

Once again I ask you for support in our long tough battle ahead.

Dear Sir.

I want to thank you for the wonderful report on "David's Lounge" in Steubenville, Ohio. Even though the town is closeted we still get our crowds, on the weekends especially. If people come to the club they are greeted warmly and they are asked if they know it is mostly a gay club.

They are usually allowed to check out the club and if they come back again they are asked to buy a membership for $2.50.

We try to have a show (usually drag) at least once a month. I also want to tell you that your crew of reporters and staff were the greatest of gentlemen who made us feel like they were here every night. Very pleasant people.

God love you all and thanks again, Ron Green, Owner David's Lounge

A tribute

to Marilyn and Del

Columbus and Ohio will soon be losing two women who have made a significant contribution to the histories of the local and statewide Lesbian and Gay communities. Marilyn Bufton and Diane Delahunty will be moving out of town, and their efforts will be greatly missed in the community.

Marilyn and Del have been active in the Columbus area for several years. Marilyn arrived in Columbus in 1974, and immediately became involved in the Lesbian community. Diane arrived a year later, and her involvement grew quickly, too.

In 1976, Marilyn and Del were instrumental in the formation of Central Ohio Lesbians. COL was one of the most active groups in Columbus during its history. The group organized Gay Pride events, several of which were on the steps of the State House in Columbus. Two publications, originated by COL, have been continued by other organizations. The Women's Community Calendar is now published by the Office of Women's Studies at OSU. The Gay and Lesbian Voter's Guide is now published by Columbus Gay Alliance.

Marilyn and Del were also instrumental in the formation of Central Ohio Gay Coalition and Ohio Gay Rights Coalition. COGC served to unify the movement in the Columbus area for several years, and began publication of a community calendar, now published as News of the Columbus Gay and Lesbian Community by the Columbus Gay Alliance. OGRC has been the primary state-wide political organization in Ohio. Accomplishments include a booth at the Ohio State Fair, an educational pamphlet, and several Gay-supportive bills in the Ohio legislature.

When the need for a Parents and Friends of Gays group was expressed, Marily and Del were there, helping form the Columbus group. This group continues to serve a special need in the Columbus

area.

For several years, Marilyn and Del received telephone calls in their home for COL, COGC, and OGRC. Their phone number was often a person's first contact with the community.

We will miss the efforts of Marilyn and Del in the Columbus community. They have had a significant role in taking us where we are today. We appreciate the work they have done. We will miss them, and we wish them the best.

Dear Editor.

Concerning the recent news releases of the love notes between the late Eleanor Roosevelt and Miss Lorena Hickok:

I am understanding as to her reasons for not "coming out," during the life of the late Franklin D. Roosevelt. BUT...It appalls me to think that, this woman, highlyrespected in her own right, could hold a corner of the key, to the Constitutional Rights of Gays everywhere--AND NEVER SAID A WORD! To think how many Gays would have RUN, not walked out of their closets! It makes me wonder, just how much of my freedom, (not to

mention hers), was buried in these grave, along with her. Yes, Eleanor, we will win our rights, possibly not as fast had you spoken up, but never-the-less, WE WILL WIN, the rights, afforded every citizen of the United States.

The letters aforementioned are currently being printed in a book entitled, "The Life of Lorena Hickok byDoris Faber, published by, William Morrow & Company.
